The excitement was real, no doubt about it.
As Cameron Diaz stood in the spotlight at the 1996 ShoWest Awards held
in Las Vegas, her voice breaking with emotion, she clutched the trophy
which confirmed her victory in the 'Female Star Of Tomorrow' category,
deservedly won for the excellent performance in her debut film, and fought
to deliver the traditional list of thanks to everyone who'd helped make
that triumph possible.
One name missing from the roll call she blurted
out at the
annual event was her own. If there is any one person who
should take full credit for her arrival at the pinnacle of
Hollywood super stardom, it is Cameron Diaz herself. She had driven
herself through twelve audition call-backs to steal the leading lady part,
and had become an over-night success.
Super stardom had been achieved, in one bold
stroke, by her performance as the seductive night-club singer, Tina Carlyle
in the 1995 comedy 'The Mask'. Her days of modelling in fashion magazines
and catalogues were over, and a career as an actress had taken root in
her life. At the age of 24, blonde and beautiful Cameron Diaz from Long
Beach, California had in a lone movie appearance become a leading player
in the world's biggest and richest game. |
